People with red hair are actually mutants! Except they’re a little less glamorous than the mutants you see in the X-men movies. MC1R – a mutation in a gene is the cause for the bright red colour! Around 4-5% of the world’s population carry this gene and are vastly found in European areas (especially Scotland and Ireland!). It is a recessive gene, which means if both your parents have the MC1R gene, you have a 100% chance of having red hair.

Because the condition is so rare, many people have crafted myths about it. Here’s one: There have been claims that redheads might go extinct. This is actually not true – Red hair might skip generations, but it won’t disappear! An example of this is Prince Harry who inherited his red hair from his grandfather Prince Philip, and not his parents!
