(14 Dec 2014) REDHEADS GATHER IN ARGENTINA FOR ANNUAL CONVENTION
Dozens of members of Argentina’s so-called “Redhead Club” gathered in a central Buenos Aires square Saturday (13 DEC. 2014) for its annual convention.
The members, all of which have red hair, say their mission statement is to represent their minority group – redheads in Argentina.
While no official figures exist, the founders say Argentina is the Latin American country with the largest number of redheads per capita.
Members of the group say like other minority groups, they have to overcome a certain amount of social bias.
The gatherings also give them a chance to share common stories, such as those of nicknames for red heads.
Group member Luciano Vita mentioned the nickname “colo”, which refers to the word “colorado”, meaning red-colored in Spanish, and a universal nickname for redheads in Argentina.
“When someone here says “colo”, we all turn around and look,” he said.
Vita met his girlfriend Valeria Aumasque, also a redhead, through the group’s Facebook page, which now has more than five-thousand members from all over the country.
The group also gets together outside of the annual convention for events and activities.
They recently held a pageant to select a King and Queen to preside over the “ginger kingdom”.
Argentina is one of Latin America’s most ethnically diverse countries mainly because of the great immigration wave from Europe to Argentina in the mid-19th century.
