(14 Dec 2014) Dozens of members of Argentina’s so-called “Redhead Club” gathered in a central Buenos Aires square on Saturday for its annual convention, marking the second full year of its existence.
The members, all of which have red hair, came together under their mission statement of representing a “minority group”.
While no official figures exist, the founders say Argentina is the Latin American country with the largest number of redheads per capita.
Members of the group say that, like other minority groups, they have to overcome a certain amount of social bias.
The gatherings also give them a chance to share common stories, such as those of nicknames.
Group member Luciano Vita mentioned the nickname “colo”, which refers to the word “colorado”, meaning red-coloured in Spanish, and a universal nickname for redheads in Argentina.
“When someone here says ‘colo’ and well, we all turn around and look,” he said.
Vita met his girlfriend Valeria Aumasque, also a redhead, through the group’s Facebook page, which now has more than five-thousand members from all over the country.
Beyond the seriousness of their mission, the group gets together for regular events and activities.
They recently held a pageant to select a King and Queen to preside over the “ginger kingdom”.
And the group also has a Little Prince- 9-year-old, Joaquin Sierramora, who even proposed the creation of a school only for the redheads.
Argentina is one of Latin America’s most ethnically diverse countries mainly because of the great immigration wave from Europe to Argentina in the mid-19th century.
